You may only have one opportunity to play the tapes after baking. It is best after the baking process to convert the tapes to other media at that time.

I was just told today by folks in production that they recommend a convection oven at 120 degrees for 30 minutes or longer to eliminate the squeak. Longer does not cause any harm to them. It is best if the reels are metal, as plastic may melt or warp if the temperature gets too high.

"We were also given a lesson in splicing tape, which proved to be a valuable lesson as many of the tapes broke when they were played. We also learned how to bake tapes in a 120 degree oven. This helped to eliminate the “squeak�? that occurs with old and dry tape. We have a new appreciation for computers and digital technology."
