Procedure to add an already established category (e.g. “Manuals”)

(If you are wanting to add categories to a SPARK page you’ve just created, read through the whole new page, making notes of what media types are being talked about. See the headings below for help in deciding on what categories are appropriate.)

  1. Click on Edit at the top of the page.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the editable section and put in your category--e.g., [[Category:Manuals]].
  3. Click on Preview.
  4. When all looks good, add the note in the summary line: “Added a Category” (or plural).
  5. Click on Save Page.
  6. Go to the bottom and see if any of the categories are red instead of blue—which would mean that the category page doesn’t exist yet. (See below if a category needs to be set up.)

Procedure to create a new category

If this is a category that has not existed before, do the following to set it up: (The example is for creating a category named “Manuals.”)

1. Make sure the category doesn’t already exist with the same or similar name.
  • Go to "Special pages" in the toolbox on the left side.
  • Go to "Categories" under "List of Pages."
  • Click on '500' towards the top to be sure to get all the categories.
  • Look to see if that category already exists with the same or similar name.
2. Create the Category page:
  • Go to “search” on the left side of the screen and type in Category:Manuals. (Follow the convention of capitalizing the first letter of the category. There is no space between the 'y,' the colon, and that first letter.)
  • Click on Go.
  • If a category doesn’t already exist, it brings up a page that says “this page does not exist but you can create it.”
  • Click on the red “create this page”
  • That brings up a blank page.
  • Type in the box given, “This includes all pages in this Manuals category.” Type any other words you want to appear to help identify or explain the category.
  • Go to the bottom and click on Preview to check your work.
  • When it is ready, add a note in the Summary line “Created new category.”
  • Save and go back and look at the changes made.
From this point on, any pages with [[Category:Manuals]] at the bottom will show up on this newly created category page.
