From SPARK
One-sentence summary
One week in the life of a young Filipino village boy.
Description
This book gives young children a glimpse of the life and activities of a young Manobo boy named Maki. Maki lives on the island of Mindanao, in the southern Philippines.
The story follows one week in Maki’s village life. The story gives interesting, accurate details that will interest young children. The book has 36 pages. It has pictures in four colors. The point of the book is to show that even very young children can realize they have done wrong and ask God for forgiveness. They can also invite the Holy Spirit to live in them.
Considerations
- The story is simple.
- The drawings show common activities that would take place in many rural parts of the world.
- There are only two problems.
- The first problem relates to the drawing on page two. The drawing on page two shows a family meal with two plates laid out on the floor while the family gathers around. The story indicates that each family member had a plate.
- The second problem is on page twenty-three. The riverside view shows “little sister” wearing her dress instead of pretending to wash it. This does not follow the story line.
When the children see these two pictures they will question why the pictures do not agree with the story.
Limitations
Guidelines for Use
- The story would be useful on an audio cassette. This would eliminate the problems mentioned earlier
- It would be good to use in the Philippines or in some other similar setting.
- Used in a flipchart, the drawings would show Manobo life. In other cultures children could look for similarities and differences.
