Jungle Doctor in Slippery Places
From SPARK
One-sentence summary
An exciting Jungle Doctor adventure story for children.
Description
Since the Jungle Doctor books were first published, other jungle doctors have been working in Mvumi Hospital, Tanzania, East Africa. Some doctors are Australian like Paul White. Others are British, West Indian, or East African. This story introduces one of these African doctors, Dr. Daudi Matama. Although Daudi is also a important character in many of the other Jungle Doctor books, this one tells about his adventure as the doctor in charge of the hospital.
This book begins with a two-page introduction to the author and his life as a doctor and storyteller.
- It is followed by facts about Tanzania. There are continuing health problems to solve plus some new ones. The good news of Jesus never changes and encourages those who listen and obey. Missions throughout Africa are often now run by African Christians. This Jungle Doctor book is about bringing physical and spiritual health and healing to Africa.
- The people and words used in the story are explained.
- The final section of this introduction tells how hunting has changed from killing animals to the caring and raising of them. Wild animals are now captured by camera on film instead of in cages.
Brief summary of story: Dr. Daudi Matama is concerned. His trusted assistant has stolen hospital supplies. He is selling them in the black market near the slippery shores of the forbidden “Cooking Pot” area.
The villagers are experiencing famine and starvation because millions of weaver birds are eating their crops. Can the harvest be saved? Is there hope for the young man, Yakobo? The ending shows how forgiveness is offered to the wayward one, who still must pay the price for his evil deeds.
