One-sentence summary
Children's activity book
Description
This is a 60-page spiral-bound book written in English for educating and encouraging elementary age children to learn about the African country of Sudan. They learn about children and adult Christians in Sudan who often face strong persecution for their beliefs. A main goal of this book is to encourage children to pray for these people.
- The book begins with a brief explanation of facts about Sudan and a suggested activity of coloring a drawing of the Sudan flag to use as a prayer reminder.
- Directions are given for a map activity that includes the neighbors of Sudan.
- Pages five through fourteen are stories from Natinga. These are stories about young orphan boys who have settled in a large refugee camp.
- Life in Sudan is described by someone who lived there.
- Twenty-eight pages continue to tell stories and suggest activities to learn about Sudan.
- The final 15 pages offer additional activities and information as well as an answer key for those activities that need one.
Considerations
- The colored pictures in the book add interest.
- This is a good way to make the study of geography more personal by learning about real people (usually children) who have decided to follow Jesus in spite of opposition from families and others.
Limitations
- Not all activities will be appropriate in every culture, but enough are usable to make the book useful in some format in many cultures.
- Unfortunately all Bible verses quoted are from the KJV (King James Version). A suggested substitute that would be easier to translate would be from the CEV (Contemporary English Version).
- Some of the activities such as crossword puzzles and word searches may need to be adapted when translated into other languages.
- In some Muslim-controlled countries this booklet might cause serious trouble if authorities found it.
Guidelines for Use
- Much of the information might be recorded on audio cassette or CD and the colored pictures used in a flipchart format.
- The information and activities found in this book would be good to use in a Sunday School or Christian school setting where the children could be encouraged to pray for the people in Sudan who face difficulties and dangers when deciding to follow Jesus.
- The Bible verse to encourage this prayer is Hebrews 13:3 (The booklet uses KJV, but I suggest an easier version to translate from such as the CEV. “Remember the Lord's people who are in jail and be concerned for them. Don't forget those who are suffering, but imagine that you are there with them.”)
