One-sentence summary

Children's activity book

Description

This 56-page book begins with an interesting but simple review of facts about Nigeria. This is followed by a craft, making a simple Nigerian flag as a prayer reminder. A map of Nigeria is provided that includes all the state boundaries. Next is a simple Nigerian crossword clues and puzzle. Ten short “bold believer” stories are each followed by an activity. These activities include:

  • Foods
  • A game to make and play
  • An African bead necklace to make
  • A word game
  • Learning some words in the Hausa language and about tonal language examples of Yoruba. (Both are two of the more than 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria that have their own language)
  • Another simple game
  • A prayer calendar
  • Two pages of cards explaining what Muslims do and do not believe
  • Questions and answers about Shariah (Muslim) Law (includes a chart)
  • A math game of decoding words from a Bible verse

The book ends with six additional coloring pages and activities.

Considerations

Strengths and Recommendations
  • The colored pictures in the book add interest.
  • Much of the information might be recorded on audio cassette or CD and the colored pictures used in a flipchart format.
  • The information and activities found in this booklet would be good to use in a Sunday School or Christian school setting where the children could be encouraged to pray for the people in Nigeria who face difficulties and dangers when deciding to follow Jesus.
  • The Bible verse to encourage children to pray is Hebrews 13:3 (The booklet uses King James Version, but I suggest an easier version to translate from such as the CEV: “Remember the Lord's people who are in jail and be concerned for them. Don't forget those who are suffering, but imagine that you are there with them.”)
  • This booklet is a good way to make the study of geography more personal by learning about real people (usually children) who have decided to follow Jesus in spite of opposition from families and others.
  • Instructions for making the African game called Mancala also tell how it is played in Africa. Children often simply dig two rows of six holes in the ground and use seeds or pebbles as game pieces or markers.
  • For security purposes the children pictured are not always the ones named in the stories.

Limitations

  • Some of the activities such as crossword puzzles and word searches may need to be adapted when translated into other languages.
  • In some Muslim-controlled countries this book might cause serious trouble if authorities found it.
