One-sentence summary
The Biblical Education & Leadership Training (BELT) is a three- to five-week intensive Bible course.
Description
The primary goal is to help individual language projects in their vision to see the local Scriptures being used. BELT's desire is to work alongside local leaders and pastors who have a hunger for further Biblical instruction and have a desire to teach others what they have learned. With the help of the on-site Bible translators and workers, the BELT team seeks to customize the teaching topics and discussion times to meet the felt needs of the local people, making the curriculum and method as culturally relevant as possible. Practical application of the material and outreach opportunities are strongly encouraged. The BELT team will also be encouraged to continue to study and teach others in their own communities.
Most of the BELT team will have had at least two years of Bible training as well as some previous field experience. Also, many of the BELT team will have completed relevant cross-cultural training courses (e.g. ALERT Learning Modules by Evelyn Davis).
Considerations
- Can short-term courses like the BELT courses be effective?
- Can a short-term team learn how to behave effectively in a cross-cultural setting and be able to adequately communicate in a cross-cultural situation?
- How can the problem of not knowing the language be overcome?
- Can significant relationships with participants of courses be developed through short-term courses?
